Dear Emily (Wheeler Large Print Book Series)
Published in Hardcover by Wheeler Pub (November, 1995)
Author: Fern Michaels
Average review score:

unbelievable, really..
This was the first book I have ever read from Ms. Michaels. Unfortunately If I don't love book at first read, than I never read another from same author. I'm not proud of this but that's the way I am. I don't know how this was given five stars from even one reader. I realize not everyone's taste is the same but.. There was a certain section in the book that completely turned me off.. A scene at the airport where Emily was going to go away for a couple of months... She hugged her friends, cried, walked a few steps, came back and hugged them again telling them how much she loved them. She acted as if she was never coming back. Get real! I also think she gave herself too much importance as if everyone was supposed to be in awe of her owning fitness centers. "I'm Emily, of Emily's Fitness Centers..." So what. Then she talks to the ghost of her dead husband. Too wierd for me. I'll stick to Sandra Brown, my favorite.

Dynamic Emily!
I have been a fan of Fern Michaels from WAY back, when she was doing romance novels. This book was fantastic! Emily might have felt bad for what happened to her rotten husband, but I didn't! I felt that he got exactly what he deserved. This book showed how easily it can be for a woman to lose herself in her husbands world and lose sight of herself. When they walk away, you are left with "what do I do now" and "who am I" kind of thing. This book showed how one woman put herself and her life back together again, one step at a time. Once you meet Emily, you won't soon forget her!

My favorite Fern Michaels book thus far!
I am a HUGE Fern Michaels fan, but I must say that Dear Emily is my favorite of Fern's books. This book gives so much hope, and is such a wonderful story. If you have ever battled with your weight, love life, or self esteem, this book is for you. It changed my life. THANK YOU FERN!

End of the Drive (Wheeler Large Print Book Series)
Published in Hardcover by Wheeler Pub (October, 1997)
Author: Louis L'Amour
Average review score:

Fascinating !
The inheritors of the authors estate are trying to locate people the author had met over his lifetime and during the second world war. This search for people L'Amour knew, is a section at the end of the book.

Nevertheless, L'Amour is first, a judge of human character.

After Sec'y of Commerce Brown's plane went down an exacerbation of events occurred.

Apparently, a seder, or printed read-through used by Jewish people observing the exodus from Egypt at Passover at dinner, a seder or Haggadah was held in security by Muslims in Yugoslavia. Reading here includes _Black Land and Grey Falcon_ by Rebecca West, and the Vatican Codex Haggadah, _Tanna Debe Eliyyahu: the Lore of the School of Elijah_ translated from the Hebrew by William G. Braude and Israel J. Kapstein published by The Jewish Publication Society of America, Philadelphia, 1981.

The _Tanna_ on page 16, that age at which Americans are given the privelege to drive (more road death from automobiles than all the American military deaths in all American wars) has this passage:

"Blessed be the Preserver of the world, blessed be He in whose presence no man is favored more than another, from whose presence clear shining and light [come] to the world, from whose presence rains come to the world and tender grass comes into the world. The reward of the righteous who wear themselves out in study of words of Torah {the first five books of the Bible, starting with Genesis, also called the Pentateuch} is that Scripture regards them as though it is they who bring clear shining and light into the world, as though it is they who bring rains and blades of tender grass into the world. Hence it is said, [Because of the righteous]... {drinking and driving don't mix either, ask a qualified MADD}...clear shining, rain, even tender grass springeth out of the earth (2 Sam. 23:4)."

The interesting story that relates to the Codex Haggadah passage is in this collection of Louis L'Amour's, _End of the Drive_.

The name of the story is: "Elisha Comes to Red Horse".

Do you know the difference between Elijah and Elisha in the Bible?

No I Don't So What
The short stories in this book were marvelous. And it does not make any difference if you know the meaning of ELISHA or ELIJHA. Who really cares? Lets keep a controversial philosophy out of good westerns, thank you.

Vintage Louie Lamour
A most splendid collection of short stories from America's premier storyteller. Reading these newly discovered stories made me realize how sad it is that we will never again be rewarded with his true brand of genius. The novel at the end "Rustler Roundup" was superb. I truly hope his spirit and love of the Old West will forever live on

Catalan: A Comprehensive Grammar (Routledge Grammars)
Published in Unknown Binding by Routledge (E) (September, 1999)
Authors: Max W. Wheeler, Alan Yates, and Nicholas Dols
Average review score:

Highly recommandable for both learners and linguists
This grammar, written by a team of excellent experts in Catalan linguistics, is useful to both (foreign) learners of the language and scholars of Romance or General Linguistics. The content is well structured and accessible to the non-expert, but without being superficial as happens with many learner's grammars. Being written in English and published by a reknown publisher, it reaches a large readership, which it deserves. The book also successfully tries to be complete on the level of linguistic variation, with different dialectal areas (Catalonian as well as Valencian and Balearic Catalan) and social strata being considered. There are other useful sources for either the learner of the language or the linguist, written in Catalan, Spanish, or even English (e.g. José I. Hualde's 1992 grammar published by the same publisher), but for the time being, I would recommand the Wheeler et al. book as the best choice for the learner and the second best choice for the linguist (the best linguistic choice being the "Gramàtica del català contemporani" reference grammar published in 2002 but difficult to get hold of outside Spain).

Complete, Comprehensive Catalan For All Learners
If you are searching for a the most complete, extensive book on learning Catalan, then you search has ended. "Catalan: A Comprehensive Grammar" by authors Max. W. Wheeler, Alan Yates, and Nicolau Dols is the best book on the market in learning this widely spoken Romance language.

Published by the magnificent British publishing giant, Routledge Press, this book will give you the lowdown on everything you need to read, write, and understand Catalan. Grammar, structure, verb conjugations are all covered here. Mr. Yates, who in my opinion is one of the best Catalan linguists in the world, previously wrote the excellent "Teach Yourself Catalan" book, which was the first book that allow me to comprehend Catalan in little time.

Both Wheeler and Yates, who are professors at two universities in Great Britain, along with Dols, who teaches at a university in Spain, have done an excellent job in capturing the essence and importance of this language.

While Catalan is primarily spoken only in four countries (Spain, France, Andorra, and Italy), it is a language that should be studied by those interested in Catalan studies. Travelers and businessmen to Catalonia and the Balearic Islands will find this book helpful in learning this language, that although it is the seventh most spoken in the European Union, it is not officially recognized by that organization.

If you want to learn Catalan, I suggest the following books.

(1) "Teach Yourself Catalan" by Alan Yates

(2) "Catalan Sin Enfuerzo" by the Assimil staff (for Spanish speakers wanting to learn Catalan)

(3) "Catalan-English Dictionary" by the Routledge Press staff (It is about $30)

(4) "Cambridge Word Selector: English-Catalan" by the Cambridge University Press staff.

With these books, you'll be mastering this once-forbidden language in no time. No trip to Barcelona, Catalonia, or the Balearic Islands can be fully enjoyed without learning the native language of the region's inhabitants.

A complete survey of the language
Routledge's and Blackwell's "Comprehensive Grammars" are perhaps the most complete linguistic surveys made today. Whether you're travelling to Catalonia, wish to read Catalan poetry, or are just linguistically interested in Catalan, this book can help you get an orderly and thorough understanding of the language, regardless of your initial level.

While Catalan has undergone serious standardization programs in recent years, it still has wide regional variation, and this book addresses it fairly good. Besides, the book is very detailed (like all the books in the series I mentioned above), so you may wish to skip some parts of it if you use it just for reference.

Field Guide to Hawks of North America
Published in Hardcover by Houghton Mifflin Co (01 November, 2001)
Authors: William S. Clark and Brian K. Wheeler
Average review score:

Don't be fooled!
This book is not all that other reviewers have made it to be. The plates are often vague and marginally helpful in field identification. This may be an ok first guide, but birders should look elsewhere for raptor identification tips!

thorough reference
This book certainly lives up to the standards of other peterson guides which I keep handy all the time. Hawks can be tricky identifying so I use this book in tandem with The Photographic Guide to North American Raptors. These two books together make a great set

Quality Study
This book is not only informitive but the photos and diagrams are high quality like the paper it is printed on.
If you love birds of prey like me , get this book.

Illusions (Wheeler Large Print (Cloth))
Published in Hardcover by Wheeler Pub (July, 1997)
Author: Janet Dailey
Average review score:

Janet Dailey rediscovered after so many problems
Since my youth, I know the existence of Janet Dailey, but I never wanted to try her books. And some years ago, when I heard about the plagiarism she made on Nora Roberts books (and Nora's one of my favorites), I was disgusted.

But the worlds keep moving, and then, ILLUSIONS came to my hands and I started to read it. And believe me, I loved this book. I couldn't believe that it was plagiarism, and later I knew it wasn't. Janet has a very nice sense of humor, she made up adorable characters on this book and a very nice plot that kept me reading during the whole night. It's the kind of book that sometimes it's not so interesting but that is never boring. I loved this book and I'd highly recommend it for fans of this genre. Janet is a very good writer.

Interesting
This book started out with a cast of interesting characters, however, early on you could figure out who Delaney would end up with. Jared, Lucas, and Riley all interested in Delaney, lots of side characters that were quirky (her dad, Toby, Susan, Delaney's staff, Rina, the lawyer). It was a fun summer read, went quickly, and had a plot instead of girl meets guy who she doesn't like but who likes her, etc., etc.

It was her best yet.
I thought it was very good. I was kind of surprised about the end but it was good regardless.

I have read all of Janet Dailey's and this is the best one yet.

The Oxford Russian Dictionary: English-Russian Russian-English
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (February, 1994)
Authors: Paul Falla, Marcus Wheeler, Boris Unbegaun, Colin Howlett, Nigel A. Rankin, and Jessie Coulson
Average review score:

Slightly bizarre
I have read the other reviews and based my purchase on them. I was greatly disappointed by several big "holes". First, there is no full alphabetical listing of vowels and consonants, upper and lowercase letters. Second, there is no phonetic pronuciation in either the English or Russian halves. You would have to be a second year student to know the pronunciations already OR have to try and write out each word letter-by-letter. Not useful at all for carrying along on a trip to the CIS or Russia.

The Bible of Russian dictionaries
Easily the best Russian dictionary I've ever used, and I've been using them for 50 years. There are so many examples of how the word is used that it's fun just as a casual read. You'll learn a lot more than just a simple definition.

Fantastic and comprehensive dictionary
This dictionary is the best one available for all anyone who is studying the Russian language. It is easy to use and has all the abreviations and everything else you could need.

Dynamics of Isshinryu Karate
Published in Paperback by National Book Network (June, 1978)
Authors: Harold Long and Allen Wheeler
Average review score:

Introduction to Isshinryu.....
...and that's really all its supposed to be. To really study the art, you must practice it - not read about it. Thus, the book serves as a basic introduction to Isshinryu and reference material to new students and those practicing there katas alike. However, the book pails in comparsion to actually meeting and talking to Master Wheeler about his experiences as a 10th Dan, but the book will tide you over till you can talk to the master yourself.

look inside
This book well be very helpful for the person who is able to LOOK INSIDE the authors meaning. Tech of KARATE are not always in front of you, you must talk to your kata ( as the author indicates )in order to understand the application of self defense through the practice of kata.Find this book and enjoy! also look for the first 2 books of collection they will help in your studies...GOOD LUCK !

Master J.L.Cuevas 6th dan

Traditional Isshinryu
Traditional Isshinryu what more can you say.... Use Master Longs books and tapes and you will the learn the true traditional way. Master Long wanted his students to use these books as their text so that Isshinryu would not be changed.... If you are a Isshinryu student you have to get these books, they are great for reference. Use them and Isshinryu will stay traditional. (In Traditional Isshinryu there is only"ONE HEART/ONE WAY")

Margin of Error (Wheeler Large Print Book Series (Paper))
Published in Paperback by Wheeler Pub (May, 1998)
Author: Edna Buchanan
Average review score:

DISAPPOINTING!
I was very disappointed in this book. I felt that certain scenes dragged which left me bored and turning pages without reading them. The chemistry between Lance and Britt could have been more explosive. There was something always exploding or catching fire in this book, too bad it wasn't them. And then, when a relationship between them is finally established, in the end they part and go their separate ways. I really felt cheated. This was my first taste of Edna Buchanan's work and if her other books are like this one, it'll be my last. Read it and decide for yourself.

Miami, Murder, Movies & Mayhem
Truly the author has tied up all the necessary components in this novel set in a Miami that is beautifully diagrammed. Britt, a crime reporter, has her back up most the time but slides into a more human role about halfway into the book. The story weaves through the setting, crimes and a movie in a starkly lovely way, meeting some pretty weird folks. A bit different, but a good tight story. I listened to the unabridged audio, and thought the reader was well suited to the Britt character and did an admirable job on voice changes as well.

A great listen with intrigue
I listen to audio books while doing housework. I found this one to be different and interesting. Which is hard to find when you read as much as I do. The ending was totally predictable, but it was still a fun, easy read. I'm glad they didn't end up together, it would have never worked and made the story more realistic that way. Go for MacDonald, Britt!!!

Murder in Georgetown: An Eleanor Roosevelt Mystery (Wheeler Large Print Book Series (Paper))
Published in Paperback by Wheeler Pub (December, 1999)
Author: Elliott Roosevelt
Average review score:

Eleanor, oh my goodness!
I've enjoyed reading Elliot Roosevelt's murder mysteries as an easy, enjoyable read in between tackling the 600 plus page novels by other authors. You can put your mind back into the 1930's and 40's, and get an interesting look (albeit fictional) into some of the famous names from the era. 'Murder in Georgetown' was more of the same, with Eleanor meeting with the Marx brothers, J. Edgar, Joe Kennedy, and others. However, the content of this book seemed to take an alarming change from previous books in the series. Is this really one of the late Elliot's unpublished manuscripts, or an attempt by a 'ghost' writer to continue the series? There is too much of a sexual content present, with repeated references to sex, stripping, lovemaking, etc. I lost count on how many times the author used the phrase "empty seminal vesicles" during the book. While the style and content may fit well into books by other authors, it seemed out of place in a Roosevelt mystery. I'm no prude by any stretch of the imagination, but Eleanor, please, clean up your act! P.S. The date typo (1945) near the end of the book was also a sloppy oversight by the editor.

Very Interesting Look At The First Lady
This was a very interesting look at the First Lady and how she helped solve a murder of a very prominent member of the Federal Reserve Board. She enlisted the help of the Secret Service and Joe Kennedy. It led her down a path of deceit and theft. I found the book to be very interesting and the First Lady Eleanor to be portrayed as a formidable person to deal with. I don't think you would want to be on her bad side. Interesting facts about the White House and President in this book as well.

Fast Paced Historical Murder Mystery
This novel is packed with family references. Rumors, bootleggers, bank fraud, love affairs and murder all combined to make this a wonderful read. Reality blends so well with the fictional murder that it leaves the reader wondering what is the truth. The main plot is excellent but it is the political tidbets which spice up the story. Before I read this book I had no idea some American cultures ate dirt and that it was good for you. Put it on your summer reading list.

Silver Thunder (Wheeler Large Print Softcover Series)
Published in Paperback by Wheeler Pub (November, 2002)
Author: Joan Hohl
Average review score:

Disappointed
I picked up this book because of Nora Roberts' endorsement on the cover. But, what a disappointment. This novel had the same stereotypical romance novel beginning (Alpha male makes man-hating super feminist woman look like a temper-tantrum throwing child) that caused me to take a break from new (at least to me) romance authors for a while. It seemed to redeem itself when the character Meg was introduced and she and Sean connected. Then, out of the blue, Duncan's 15 year old, inexperienced, immature sister appears and Sean's madly in love with her. What? I had to go back to make sure I didn't miss something. I can't understand why the author decided to dump the only strong woman in the book to replace her with a 15 year old child.

The fact that Meg was a prostitute and had such a tough childhood peaked my interest because I wanted to see how the author was going to work through Meg and Sean's relationship. Their storyline was more interesting to me than the main characters'.

I'm afraid that Nora Roberts' and Diana Galbadon's unconventional romances have spoiled me for most romances -- so my search for new authors to add to my short list continues.

Great Read!
Joan Hohl is a new author for me and I find her writing style great! I read the entire book in two sittings. Can't wait to read more of her books. The only hic-up was the development of the relationship between Sean and Heather. That is the only reason I gave it a 4 out of 5.

SILVER THUNDER IS PURE GOLD!
This is the first historical that I read by Joan Hohl and I really enjoyed it. Usually I read her contemporaries, which I love. This was a pageturner that I read in one sitting.
